My ears are still recovering…

Back from SXSW in Austin, where Berklee hosted three (!!) events this year. While I’m 90% recovered, my hearing may take longer to come back… I saw 40 bands in 4 days! including twelve alumni and student bands that played at Berklee’s parties, and two more – Pink Nasty and Royal Forest – who were among the dozens of alumni bands performing at shows and parties around austin last week. Do you know what the hottest news is in Berklee’s String Department?

I bet you don’t, so in the next 90 seconds of your life, I’ll show you a group of musicians who are not afraid to step outside of the box – creative string players.

Next time you see a person carrying a string instrument case at Berklee, ask what music they play.  Believe it or not, rock, blues, latin, folk, R&B, country, blugrass, Irish, African, Middle Eastern, Indian and even jazz will be among their answers!  Despite the classical heritage of these instruments, they are able to perform a variety of musical styles at Berklee, without feeling taboo.

Songs for Songs Concert: Putting Guitars in the Hands of Ugandan Youth

March 27, 2010 7pm, Entry by Donation ($10 suggested) Lily Pad 1353 Cambridge St, Cambridge, MA Natalie Sara, Robert Gillies, Hannah Christianson, Allison Preisinger *Collecting Guitar Donations Before and After Event!

Allison Preisinger, a work study for the last year and a half here at PULSE, is putting together a benefit performance of Berklee songwriters to raise money for guitars and music equipment to send to Pader, Uganda.

Natalie Weaver a Songwriting Major at Berklee recently visited Pader to work with youth effected by the ongoing war, but was limited by the lack of sufficient equipment. With only a single guitar, Natalie focused on teaching a group of students lyric and melody writing. The hope is that they can continue expanding their music education with the help of donated music gear.

An entertaining, fun and thought provoking mix of singer-songwriter, pop and folk styles will make the night a special one. Hannah Christianson, Robert Gillies, Natalie Sara , and Allison Preisinger, all Berklee singer-songwriters, will be performing their original music.

Allison is organizing and performing at this benefit in order to do her part to spread music and expression to those where it may not come as easily. You can show your support in coming out and enjoying a wonderful evening of music provided by four Berklee students!

Entry is by donation ($10 suggested) and there will be a raffle with great items to win! It is sure to be a great way to spend your Saturday evening!

There’s a conference too?

In the frenzy of activity at SXSW, two Berklee parties (check out Magen’s posts and video of the Lucky Lounge and Friends events), showcases and parties happening at all hours of the day and night, it’s easy to forget that there’s an actual conference going on: four days of  topical panels, artist interviews, demo listening sessions, trade show, and more. SXSW 2010: Party at Friends (Day 3)

Berklee alum Shayna Zaid & The Catch play Berklee’s 5th Annual Party at Friends:

Fantastic time yesterday at Friends; two showcases = more work, but a ton more fun. We got to hear Ann Driscoll, Nini & Ben, and Jordan Tarrant again, plus alumni acts Audible Mainframe, The Young Republic, Love Like Fire, Shayna Zaid & The Catch, and Berkleemusic alumni band Stefan WM. The day was a huge success, with beautiful weather and a great turnout. A video of the show (including interviews with Ann Driscoll, Jordan Tarrant, The Young Republic, and HRR director Jeff Dorenfeld) and photos will be up soon at berklee.edu, and check our YouTube page for more clips from both showcases – we’ll be uploading all weekend long!
