Berklee City Music FIRSTS – Newport Folk Festival

Back in July, the Berklee City Music Gospel Choir performed at the 2012 Newport Folk Festival. It was a first for Berklee City Music and its students led by Choir Director, Nichelle Mungo. The choir spent a full day performing “Pop-Up Performances” that inspired many who happened to catch these unannounced sets which took place near the entrance gate, the main stage, the Kid’s Tent, ending with a special performance at the artists’ gate.

They were also filmed by the SOPA production company for an upcoming documentary on the Newport Folk Festival. They appear here in this series, Behind the Walls. Check out the video.

It was a wonderful day at the Fortress and we hope to bring the kids back to the Festival this summer.

Brandi Carlile at the Berklee Performance Center

Earlier this month, well over a thousand people packed into the Berklee Performance Center, many for the first time at the venue, to see a rare, solo performance by the chart-topping singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. The sold-out show can partially be attributed to the singer’s fame with her popular songs, such as “The Story,” but also for her notoriety as an incredible performer. And the huge applause Carlile received after listing each and every Boston venue she’s played in the last decade (House of Blues, Orpheum, Paradise, etc) only reinforced the already-overwhelming anticipation for her performance. Berklee Presents Chasing Blue and BMUZ at Grey Fox

For the second year in a row at Grey Fox, Berklee’s American Roots Music Program was represented by two fine bands, in this case Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers, and Chasing Blue. A seminar on the program by its loco pater familias, Matt Glaser, was super well attended, and Berklee musicians were seemingly everywhere, playing, camping, you name it. None was seen in a kilt, however.

In a Berklee first at Grey Fox, the college presented scholarships to next summer’s Mark O’Connor Berklee Summer String Program. Our inaugural winners are ace fiddler Emma Hart, of Stamford, Connecticut, and viola whiz Julia Donahoe, of Concord, Massachusetts. We were also very pleased to meet mandolinist J.D. Williams, recipient of the Grey Fox Scholarship, who will be joining us here at Berklee in the near future.

Berklee’s SXSW Party at Lucky Lounge in photos

Back from SXSW in Austin, where Berklee hosted three events again this year. The thirteen alumni and student bands who played at Berklee’s parties made their mark among the dozens of alumni bands performing at shows and parties around Austin last week (who were in turn among 2,000 plus (!) bands playing at the 25th Anniversary of SXSW.

We had a good turnout at Off the Record at the Lucky Lounge (St. Patrick’s Day no less) and possibly our biggest crowd yet at Friends on 6th St. the following day for Berklee’s 6th Annual Official SXSW Party. The club counted nearly 750 people during the course of the day.

Sing Song with Bobby McFerrin @ The BPC
