Pat Pattison: On Writing About Writing
Liberal arts professor Pat Pattison talks about the process of writing Songwriting Without Boundaries: A Lyricist’s Guide to Finding Your Voice, which was released on January 9, 2012.
Scott, my editor at Writer’s Digest books, called: “Hey Pat, your second edition of Writing Better Lyrics is really doing great. Can you do a quick follow-up? We’d love to have another book, kind of a companion to Writing Better Lyrics. Whaddya think?”
“Um, let me get back to you on that.”
“Quick follow-up?” That’s the last thing I wanted—to do something quick and have the folks who own Writing Better Lyrics say, “Eh, it’s OK, but I don’t like it as much as Writing Better Lyrics.”
But I did want to do something, however quick or slow. But what? I’d already dealt with structure in The Essential Guide to Lyric Form and Structure, with rhyme in The Essential Guide to Rhyming, and brainstorming, lyric development, and prosody in Writing Better Lyrics. I wanted to do something that would take me to new places too. That’s one of my hopes in writing a book—to learn something new myself.

Berklee’s Spring Fest 2012
Sound Collage Contest 2012: Creativity Has No Box!
I am here to tell you all that the art of imagination has not died—it has simply reinvented itself. For the novice and professional musician alike, the use of creativity and imagination has solely depended on some source of inspiration and when there is a lack of inspiration, you hit a brick wall. But what if you were given an entire catalog of inspirational sources to choose from, where could the possibilities take you? Some of the most creative electronic sound designers were given the chance to test the limits of where their minds could take them. It forces them to think outside of the box, experience the moments of too many musical ideas or the agony of a lack thereof, and produce something unique and special.
Boston Acoustic Scene Remembers John McGann
The following post was written by Matt Glaser, artistic director for Berklee’s American Roots Music Program. Photographer Erin Prawoko provided the images.
Last Tuesday night at the Cantab Lounge there was an outpouring of love and grief for our dear, departed John McGann. The Boston acoustic music scene has become a very tight-knit community, with Berklee at its epicenter and John at the epicenter of the epicenter.
